Today was awesome! The girls were active and engaged in all of the ideas, concepts, and activities that we had planned for them. The agenda for today included beginning the first forensics unit of camp, beginning programming in Python, and continuing teaching the girls core computer science concepts.
The first forensics unit this summer is something completely new to the YWiC curriculum. This week it's all about Fingerprinting, and the instructor for this unit is Beth Rewalt. She is amazing! This morning she taught the class about whorls and other fingerprint minutae, and then taught the students how to fingerprint each other. At the end of class the students were able to match the left thumb prints of every student to the correct individual.
Another new addition to the YWiC camp curriculum is programming in Python. Students were introduced to the Python programming GUI today, and took to programming like fish to water! We are so proud of them! They learned basic syntax rules for variable declaration, if-else statements, and while and for loops. As the week progresses we hope to get them comfortable enough to begin writing their own programs.
Core concepts that were taught today were classes, objects, and properties. The girls grasped these concepts very well by the end of the lesson. Tomorrow's core concept lesson will include methods and events.
The biggest highlights for today included:
- The delay to the start of lunch; Now we know we need to order MUCH more food!
- Green and red enchiladas from Andeles are too spicy for many of the students ...
Note to self: Provide more drinks or order less spicy food!
- Minute to Win It practice has revealed that the Staff team is going to have some SERIOUS competition
next week! Time to start practicing!
