Janie kicked this Thursday off by introducing PicoCrickets as our Core Concept of the day. The students learned to incorporate sensors and gained a better understanding of input and output.
Forensics:
The students calculated their FBI Identification Number, which is based on whether or not they have whirl prints on each finger. After Beth explained why the ID numbers work, the students calculated their own numbers by hand, then Jen took over to show them how to use the computer do it. They first had to input the score for each finger based on the number of whirls, then Jen had them modify the program so that the user only answered yes or no to having a whirl on a certain finger. The program the girls wrote would then calculate the rest. All the campers really seemed to enjoy having to enter the info into the program, then seeing it return the right result!
NXT Robotics:
In today's robotics class the girls first created a mouse trap robot, then the much more complex bumper car! The lab was pretty loud with people talking through their ideas and laughing as their robots "fought" each other. NXT is a big hit this year!
