First Day of High School Alum Camp!!!!!

Welcome Back!!!!!! It's so great to see familiar faces =)

Today was the kick-off for the high school alum camp!

The girls started off in room 118, or the Ice Box as Arianna and I call it. Once most of us were in the room, we decided to take the girls out for a picnic! Well, kinda.

We had the girls stand in a circle beneath a tree and tell us what they would bring to the picnic. The items they brought corresponded with the first letter of their name. For example, I brought almonds (Not much, I know, but imagine they were covered in chocolate).

The group this year is smaller, so it didn't take long for us to have our picnic, so we went around the circle saying our favorite foods. If any of the other girls liked the food, they would take a step into the circle so we could see who else likes our favorite foods.

Lunch was next!! Today was Chachi's Mexican food, and it was delicious. (I bonded with Angela over our love of queso.) The girls had about half an hour to eat before we brought them back to the Ice Box. Arianna and I had the girls create a new blog for this camp, and when they finished, they made their Name Plates. Throughout the designing of their plates, the girls were interviewed. It was relatively painless.

Once the blogs were finished and they all answered the prompt, we went over Camp Etiquette. It was pretty easy for the girls to tell what is and is not acceptable in camp. This is a good group of girls, though, so we aren't too worried.

Next Angela and Marissa went over Computer Science Core Concepts. Most of the girls knew the terms, so it was more of a refresher course. When they finished the girls completed a crossword puzzle over the concepts, and the first five girls that finished got a prize.

After that Angela and Marissa spoke to the girls about the perks of a computer science degree, as well as tips and advice for college. Not many of the girls had a detailed plan for their futures, but that's ok! High school and college are all about exploring, and the instructors made sure to drive that point home to the girls.

To finish off the day, Angela and Marissa went over the platforms that most of the girls are interested in, including App Inventor, EV3 Robotics, HTML5, SNAP, and LilyPad Arduino. Some of the platforms that the girls want to use weren't covered, but they were given links to resources for those platforms.

Blog Prompt: Write about what you have done so far during your summer vacation, whether it was traveling somewhere or just staying at home.
