Welcome to the second first day of YWiC's middle school summer camp! We are so excited to have you here! We can't wait to explore the exciting world of Computer Science with you - there's so much to learn, do, and experiment with!
Each day you will visit our blog to find out what will be happening this summer in camp, for tips and tricks for completing your projects, to see pictures and video of camp events, and to take the camp pre- and post-surveys and End-of-Day surveys. Let's first begin with our 2014 MS Summer Camp Week 2 Pre-Survey. It can be found here!
Today was a great day to start a new camp! The weather was nice and everyone was so energetic! We love it. We started the day with the Blob Game! You guys sure run fast.
After that we went inside and did the pre-survey and learned about Camp Etiquette. Always remember them! You guys made name tags and SP went over What is Computer Science. Then you did the Scrambler paper. Turn it in before 2:30pm today! One person will win a prize!
We set up Gmails and did the Google Drive activity! After that Jen taught Lego Mindstorms NXT. She went over all the pieces! Tomorrow you'll start building with them.
After lunch we started LiveCode. Susi taught you the basics of LiveCode!
You will be able to make apps for your smartphones. It works for both iPhone and Android!
You also worked on Code.org and we did a name activity to get to know each other more! After that we blogged and did the end of day survey!
Blog Prompt: Tell us about your favorite hobby. What is it? Why do you like it? Explain!
Noor - My favorite hobby is creating art. It's hard to choose only one form of art but I guess I'd have to choose painting. It's like therapy for me. I can paint what I see in my mind and share it with others. I'm still learning and evolving my techniques. I love it because it has no limits to what it has to look like.
Ari - My favorite hobby is cross stitching. You can make almost anything if you have the right point cloth and thread. It's very relaxing to cross stitch, and it helps keep the boredom to a minimum. Sometimes I even create my own pattern, because some patterns don't look like how I want them too. I love the therapeutic aspect of the craft.
Jen - My favorite hobbies are reading (books and journal articles), coffee-drinking, programming, and binge-watching Netflix. There are so many exciting and interesting ways to entertain yourself, so why choose one! My hobbies make me unique and help me to relax. A perfect day for me would include waking up early, grabbing coffee, heading to the farmer's market, and then relaxing in a small bookstore reading or programming!
SP- My favorite hobby is creating bracelets out of seed beads. I like it because it uses my math skills to create some awesome designs. Since math is one of my favorite things, creating the bracelets is relaxing for me. If I am not doing that I am usually programming, doing a super weird math problem, or (rarely) I watch movies!!:) ;)
End of Day Survey is here!
