Pajama Day!!

Good morning, Campers!!

Today was Pajama/ Disney Day, and the girls went all out! Rosa even had a TARDIS Robe! There were a couple footie pajamas, but overall the girls dress in their comfortable pajamas, sleep clothes, or just comfortable outfits.

Today started off with open build. The girls were instructed to finish one or two projects so they can practice presenting for tomorrow. They signed up for what projects they wanted to present. We walked around making sure the girls had a plan and were set to finish their projects today. We're so excited to see the final products!

The girls have amazing projects! There are awesome websites, intricate LilyPad bags, and wonderful apps. These girls are so creative! They are great problem solvers, but aren't afraid to ask for help when it's needed.

The girls working on LilyPad had a set amount of time to finish their programming so that they could have enough time to work on the sewing. Elena passed around some of the bags she and her sister made as an example for how the stitching should look. The instructors and camp assistants went around helping the girls with the sewing, especially those who had little to no experience.

Lunch was amazing pasta from Pastaggio's. It was so delicious!

After the amazingness that was Italian food, the girls went back into the room to work on their projects. The alum girls had an open build, and some of the new camp members stayed after lunch to finish their projects. Then the girls worked on their before and after survey. Once they were done the girls continued working on their projects. Some of them were completely done, which was great! Others needed a little more time, but we're confident that they'll be done by tomorrow

At 3, the girls filled out a paper to help with their presentations tomorrow, and they used them to present to rest of the class.

Don't forget to wear your YWiC shirts tomorrow!!!

Dress Up Wednesday

Happy Dress Up Wednesday!

So today, was our Dapper Day.  We had a bunch of young ladies dressed to impress and it was...pretty awesome! :)  We started of our morning by talking to Sofi about her YWiC experiences and her internship.  She discussed how YWiC influenced her choices about joining the field of computing and how the Grace Hopper Conference helped her to gain the internship she has now.
Sofi also demonstrated how computer science can work in relation to another field, she is able to incorporate computer science into her major of biochemical engineering.  She is currently using both to research and develop a cure for cancer.

After our video chat with Sofi, we jumped right into LilyPad.  The girls had Open-Build, where they could work and/or finish their projects.  The Lilypad projects are so cute and are coming along beautifully, the creativity is through the roof!  We are so proud of these girls for doing their best and giving their projects their all.

After some Open-Build with Lilypad, Angela went over some more HTML 5 principles to better aid the girls in creating their projects.  After the lesson in HTML, the girls were able to work on their own pages for the remainder of their time.  The pages are coming along great, y'all are doing great!!!

Tea Party Tuesday

TOMORROW IS DAPPER DAY!! FEEL FREE TO DRESS UP IN NICE(SEMI-FANCY) CLOTHES!!

GOOD MORNING LADIES!!!!!

Today we started our day off with HTML 5. Angela continued with her lesson so that the girls could know a little bit more about the language than yesterday. The girls then started creating their own websites. We can't wait to see their ideas!! They are going to be awesome!

After designing websites we went outside to do the morning activity. We played "Through the Rabbit Hole". The girls were divided into two groups and each group was given a hula-hoop. In each group the girls had to join hands and the hula-hoop had to go through the line of girls without the girls disconnecting their hands. First we did a race between the two groups and then we got into a big circle and timed how fast we could get the hula-hoop to the end of the circle.

Next we continued LilyPad with Elena. The girls are starting to design their tote bags. They can make any design and use LEDs to light up parts of the bag. They can also use a speaker to add sound to their bag. The girls are doing great with C programming!

We are so excited for our Alice in Wonderland tea party tonight!!!

GOOD AFTERNOON GIRLS!!!

We hope that you are as excited about our Alice in Wonderland tea party as we are!!!

Today we started off with great Chinese food from Golden Star. Next the girls went into the Ice Box to learn about Network Security. The girls used a website where they had to use Linux commands. This was a great exercise for them to learn more about Network Security and  Linux. Then we went outside to play "Through the Rabbit Hole" with the girls. We did another race and then got into a circle. For the last round we started two hula-hoops on each end of the circle. It was great!!

We then went back into our regular room where the girls worked on their open build. Their projects are coming along great! We can't wait to see them present on Friday!!

Another Monday, Another Fun Day!

Happy Monday, ladies!
How was your weekend? Was it full of fun and adventure? Or was it a nice couple days of rest and relaxation?
Today's the start of our last week of camp, as well as National Sunglasses Day! So raise your head up and let's get looking stylish!

Today, Angela started off the day by teaching the girls a new coding language: HTML5! During her session, the girls learned that HTML and CSS can be used to make webpages, then the girls got started on making and customizing their very own!

For our morning activity, the girls played the game of Concentration, in which the girls had to gather around in a circle, place their right hand over the left hand of the girl beside them, and say the first thing that comes to mind from a certain subject.
We also had a friendly little competition. Our final six were: Ifunanya, Angelita, Clarissa, Verity, Julia, and our overall winner Gabi! Congratulations, ladies!

When we returned, Elena taught the girls another new coding language called Arduino. Using a Lilypad, the girls used Arduino to program a small LED to blink on and off. Tomorrow the girls will learn if their code to make an LED turn on and off with a button will work.

After, Elisa returned to test what the girls had learned about Java, by having them play a game called Bamboozled. The girls were split into six teams of four (or three), and advanced around the room every time they answered one of Elisa's questions correctly. At the end they had to answer the SUPER CHALLENGE, which the girls solved amazingly!

Finally, the girls received a presentation from Marie Borchert about Entrepreneurship. We hope they learned a lot about the meaning and importance of being an Entrepreneur.

(But really girls, remember our Tea Party tomorrow from 6:00 to 8:00! You can join us even earlier to watch Alice and Wonderland at 4:30, and then stay for the party! You're also allowed to dress up as a wonderland character if you'd like! Be as wacky and creative as you want! We really hope you join us, the YWiC staff has worked really hard on it!)

Good Afternoon YWiC Alum!
I hope you all had a wonderful morning!

Today the girls started out with a yummy lunch of Cha Chi's!

When the girls returned inside, they were greeted by Elisa! To test what the girls had learned during their Java sessions, Elisa split the girl up into six groups of four (or three) to play a game called Bamboozled, in which they advance through the room every time they answer one of Elisa's questions correctly. At the end of the game, the girls had to answer the SUPER CHALLENGE, which they all got right! They truly are amazing! After Bamboozled, Elisa gave the girls two different Java lab choices to do for their open build. I wonder which one they will pick~

The girls then went outside for their afternoon activity; a competitive game of Concentration. Our final six were Mireya, Adriana, Benita, Reema, Elisa, and our overall winner Jazmin! Congrats, girls!

Finally, they girls came back inside to work on their projects! Everyone's projects are coming along great! They all look amazing and are wonderfully coded~ (You did code your projects, right girls?)

It's Friday, Friday!

Good morning, Campers! I hope your week has been amazing and full of fun!

I'm sure you all can't wait for the weekend and a chance to sleep in again.

This morning started with the girls writing down their blogs, which I will be adding to the other blog post.

After most of them wrote  down their blog urls, we took the girls into the Atrium to play Guess Who?. We gave the girls a card with the name of a famous woman, either fictional or real. The girls had to hold the cards to their foreheads and weren't allowed to look at their own. Then they walked around asking yes or no questions to figure out who they were. When about half of them figured out who they were, they played a game of concentration.

Once everyone figured out who they were, the girls came back into the room for open build. They have to finish their apps by the end of today, so we went around helping them with their difficult code. It was frustrating, but it was very rewarding when the app worked.

Around 11, the girls got to talk to Sam McGuinn, a veteran YWiC camper, helper, and instructor. She talked to the girls about her job at Cisco, as well as her internship there. The girls asked her the questions they had, and she was very willing to answer them. At the end of the question period, Sam gave the girls a virtual tour of the building she works for. The connection was a bit spotty at times, but overall it was really informative. Sam told the girls that, if they're not challenged, they're not growing. Great advice no matter what field you choose to go into.

After the video call, the girls moved into Java. Elisa went over conditionals before jumping into loops. The girls were given challenges and tasks to master the conditionals, since they needed them for the loops they learned about.

Good afternoon, High School Alum!

We started the day with amazing sandwhiches. After eating the delicious subs, the girls went into the lab to start on Java. The girls went over conditionals before learning about loops. They practiced with for and while loops, and got to use Eclipse to test out their code.

After their Java lesson, the girls went on a field trip to the Barnes&Noble Bookstore. They explored the only building with an escalator in Cruces, and many of them went to the Starbucks located inside, which helped cool many of them as we walked back to the science hall.

When we got back, the girls jumped right in to their projects. We had an open build for the remainder of the camp, and their projects are turning out so awesome!

Movie Thursday

Happy Hydration Day!!

Good morning, girls! Today is National Hydration Day, so make sure to drink lots of water!

We started the day with a group activity in the Atrium. Belle numbered off the girls into two groups. Each girl had to go around and say something they liked. If anyone else in the group liked the same thing, they would step into the circle. My (Analyssa's) group was small, so we went around three times before we had to go back into the room.

Once the campers were back in the room, they were shown an "Always # LikeAGirl" video. We wanted to inspire and encourage the girls to be who they are and do great things. We want them to know that we're proud of them and their accomplishments.

After the video, Elena went over different parts of App Inventor and reviewed with the girls. If the girls answered the question correctly, they got a prize. The girls had multiple ways of solving problems and explaining code, which was amazing!!

Next was their open build. These girls have some awesome apps! They're so creative and super intricate. I am very impressed. I can't wait to see their final products!

Around 11, Elisa came in to teach the girls more about Java. Today's lesson was mainly about math functions, showing the girls how to compute problems using Java and print them to the screen. They also incorporated the scanner and used Java to take user input and do something with it. She also challenged the girls to create awesome programs using what they learned.

Good afternoon, High School Alum!!

Today's lunch was amazing pasta from Pastaggio's.The bread was amazing and the food tasted sooooo good! We had hardly any leftovers!

Right after lunch, the girls launched into Java. Elisa reviewed with the girls for a bit before teaching them math functions. The girls learned how to compute the average, how to use modular functions, if/else statements, and concatenation. Throughout her lesson, she gave the girls challenges and used starbursts as prizes.

After her lesson, the girls started on their open build. They're making so much progress on their awesome projects!

Hump Day!

HS New

Today we started off the day with a game called Story Time. The girls were put into three groups. Each girl had to say a word or phrase to create a story within the group. After the activity we continued learning about App Inventor with Elena. The girls have come up with some great ideas for their apps and are making great progress.

After our talk with SP we went straight into Java with Elisa. We learned so much today and are excited to continue learning about it tomorrow!!!

Tuesday Awesomeness

Good morning Campers!

This morning started with Two Truths and a Lie. We numbered the girls off and they broke off into three groups. Each girl in the groups told the rest Two Truths and a Lie. Some were really easy, but quite a few stumped the rest of the girls in the group. Two of the groups finished early so they played the game of concentration.

Once we finished the morning activity, we went right into AppInventor. The girls worked on their painting app, and Elena taught them how to make the line thicker. Once they all finished the app, the girls started working on their Pirate Game app. The girls got the hang of navigating around the platform and drawers. Some of them even started personalizing their pirate apps. There were some questions, but Elena always had the answers for them. The girls will now start designing their own personalized apps. We can't wait to see their ideas!!

Blog Prompt: Tell us about your favorite superhero and why they're your favorite.

Ana: My favorite superhero is Batman. Bruce Wayne has always had a little bit of darkness within him, brought out by the murder of his parents. He wanted justice and decided to travel the world to become a master of many martial arts, techniques, and disciplines. Batman is not the mask Bruce Wayne wears, Bruce Wayne has always been the mask. I admire that about Batman. He can only come alive at in the shadows, and his fight for justice is as much a mental battle as a physical one. Though I don't fight crime, I firmly believe that I must become a master at whatever I do, if only for the reason to be able to call myself one.

Sasha: My favorite superhero is Iron Man. Although he can be a bit difficult, non-diplomatic, and quite outspoken, he is loyal to those that have fought for and with him. Tony Stark is an extremely bright individual with the gift of knowledge and dedication. He is dedicated to learning and developing new things. His superpowers and sarcasm are awesome! :)

Belle: Okay, so my favorite superhero...I dunno.  There are a variety of characters that I love for their different characteristics.  So, as cliche as it is, I do love Superman.  But I'd also like to have the personality and loyalty of Captain America while having the incredible intellect of Tony Stark (Iron Man).  I'd also want the determination of Wonder Woman.  So, the combination of all three would make for my favorite superhero.

After lunch today we had an incredible session about Java given by Elisa Cundiff. We learned about binary as well as other programming languages besides Java that are currently in use or that are less popular today. Next the girls had open build time to work on their projects. They are coming along great!! After this we continued with Blender from yesterday and completed our Maze Game. We are looking forward to learning more about Java tomorrow! The girls are doing great!!

Happy Monday!

New High School Camp

Happy Monday Guys!
Oh!  And Happy First Day of Summer!

So, we started off the day with a meet-and-greet morning activity.  We went around in a circle saying our names and what we were going to bring to our theoretical picnic.  Each food item had to match the first letter of each name.  For example, Sasha would bring sandwiches and Belle would bring banana chips :).  It was a great way to get to know names in a unique and fun way.

After the morning activity, we all came back in to learn about blogs, camp etiquette, and computer science (CS) principles.  Each young lady made awesome name tags to help each other better learn names.

After we went through our CS principles, all the girls started working on a computer science crossword puzzle.  The first three to finish received some awesome YWiC prizes and everyone who completed the puzzle got candy (woop woop!).

Once everyone got candy, Elena launched into her lesson on AppInventor. After going over the ins and outs of the program, Elena had the girls go on a scavenger hunt for AppInventor so that they could become more familiar with the program.

Then it was lunch!!!!!!!(Delicious food from Chachi's)

TGIF

And so a wonderful week comes to an end.

The day started off with sandwiches and chips and drinks. The iCredits camp finished today, so there was a lot of food for the parents and the students.

After lunch the girls went into the lab to continue their projects. They look so cool already! Some girls are still working on design, but some are working on the programming. There were even a few girls who were able to finish their programs!

At about 1:30 the girls got to talk to YWiC alum Samantha "Sam" McGuinn. Sadly, Arianna and I were unable to listen in, so we have no idea what she talked about, but we assume it was very informative.

After the call the girls continued to work on their projects.  Then at 3, the girls continued working on their mazes. They were absolutely a-MAZE-ing!! Sorry for the pun, but I couldn't resist.

Ilatian Food Coma

Bread!!!

Today's lunch was delicious Italian food from Pastaggio's. As always, the bread was amazing.

After lunch the girls went into the lab to work on their projects. It was so exciting, seeing the girls so focused on what they were working on! The lab kind of exploded in craft supplies, but it wasn't messy so it was fine. Us camp instructors and helpers kinda felt unneeded, but it was great knowing how self sufficient they all are.

Around 2, we had a video call with Nicole, a member of YWiC who is currently working in Connecticut for an internship. She's working on some Python scripting, and we are very excited for her. Some of the girls had some very good questions for her, and she was glad to answer them all. We miss Nicole, and she misses her green chile.

After her call, the girls got back to working on their projects. They look so amazing already. We can't wait for all the coding to happen!

Around 3, we took the girls outside to do the notorious Blanket Challenge. Since most, if not all, of the girls have done this particular activity before, we had to make it more challenging. So, the blanket had to stay in the same place, and the only body part that could touch the ground was their butt.

When the girls came back inside, they got snacks and water and continued working on their mazes in Blender.

And They're Off!!!!!

Welcome to Day 3 of the alum camp!

Today's amazing lunch was from Mesilla Valley BBQ Company. We had so much delicious food.

Once the girls were finished eating, they were led to the lecture hall to learn about entrepreneurship. Maria Borchert from Arrowhead Center came to talk to the YWiC alum and GK-12 students about the Innoventure program that they hold during the summer. The girls learned about what entrepreneurship is and how they can become entrepreneurs. Then they filled out a handout (after a situation involving pens) and tried to figure out how they could turn their interest into opportunities.

After that, the girls went back into the Ice Box to get working. The girls were able to finalize their ideas and start making them a reality. The camp instructors and helpers walked around to see what everyone was working on, and we were quite impressed with the creativity of this group. The girls made lots of progress on their projects and they look so awesome.

After their independent work session, we took the girls outside to play Guess Who?. The girls were given cards with the name of famous women (and girls) and were told that they could only ask yes or no questions to find out who they are. It was really fun and the girls were pretty quick with finding out who they were. Of course, there were some difficult cards, but in the end these girls managed to figure it out.

When that was done, the girls went back inside to learn more about Blender. They learned about colors and how to copy the blocks, two things that are very helpful when creating objects.

Taco Tuesday!! (JK, we had tacos yesterday...)

Welcome to Day 2!!

These mustaches are too good to shave for later ;)

Hope your day is amazing so far, High School Alum!

Today started with delicious pizza. Always a favorite among us YWiC girls. Once all the amazing pizza was devoured, the girls returned to the Ice Box to get started on their independent projects.

Sigh. It feels like just yesterday all these girls were wide-eyed and bushy tailed, all new to the program. As someone who's been a part of YWiC for nearly seven years, I am so happy to see these girls come into their own and take ownership of their projects. This is their time to shine, and we are so excited to help them in any way we can.

After their independent work time, Ari and I had the girls move to a semi-open area of the Ice Box to get their blood flowing with a challenge. The girls were given cards with a number on it and had to order themselves without talking or using their hands. Since most of them have done this challenge before, we decided to make it harder for them. The girls had to line up in order, and then odds first and then evens. They were really good at ordering themselves, so I had them line up in the following pattern: 1, 19, 2, 18, 3, 17,...etc.

The girls were great at it and finished early. After they finished the activity, the girls learned about Blender. They had some snacks while watching a short video and seemed very interested in the platform. We handed a paper with the keyboard short-cuts and the girls were tasked with finding references for their maze games. They got to learn and explore Blender to get more familiar with it. It was a little confusing to learn about how to click and making sure they all had mouses that could middle click, but we figured it out.

All in all, it was a pretty good day.

First Day of High School Alum Camp!!!!!

Welcome Back!!!!!! It's so great to see familiar faces =)

Today was the kick-off for the high school alum camp!

The girls started off in room 118, or the Ice Box as Arianna and I call it. Once most of us were in the room, we decided to take the girls out for a picnic! Well, kinda.

We had the girls stand in a circle beneath a tree and tell us what they would bring to the picnic. The items they brought corresponded with the first letter of their name. For example, I brought almonds (Not much, I know, but imagine they were covered in chocolate).

The group this year is smaller, so it didn't take long for us to have our picnic, so we went around the circle saying our favorite foods. If any of the other girls liked the food, they would take a step into the circle so we could see who else likes our favorite foods.

Lunch was next!! Today was Chachi's Mexican food, and it was delicious. (I bonded with Angela over our love of queso.) The girls had about half an hour to eat before we brought them back to the Ice Box. Arianna and I had the girls create a new blog for this camp, and when they finished, they made their Name Plates. Throughout the designing of their plates, the girls were interviewed. It was relatively painless.

Once the blogs were finished and they all answered the prompt, we went over Camp Etiquette. It was pretty easy for the girls to tell what is and is not acceptable in camp. This is a good group of girls, though, so we aren't too worried.

Next Angela and Marissa went over Computer Science Core Concepts. Most of the girls knew the terms, so it was more of a refresher course. When they finished the girls completed a crossword puzzle over the concepts, and the first five girls that finished got a prize.

After that Angela and Marissa spoke to the girls about the perks of a computer science degree, as well as tips and advice for college. Not many of the girls had a detailed plan for their futures, but that's ok! High school and college are all about exploring, and the instructors made sure to drive that point home to the girls.

To finish off the day, Angela and Marissa went over the platforms that most of the girls are interested in, including App Inventor, EV3 Robotics, HTML5, SNAP, and LilyPad Arduino. Some of the platforms that the girls want to use weren't covered, but they were given links to resources for those platforms.

Blog Prompt: Write about what you have done so far during your summer vacation, whether it was traveling somewhere or just staying at home.
