Last Day of Camp :'(

IT'S PRESENTATION DAY!!!

Today is a bittersweet day as the high school camp comes to an end. :( It has been such a wonderful two weeks with these amazing young women. Each of the girls are unique and they all have very bright futures ahead of them. We have enjoyed getting to know all of them! :)

We kicked off today with a morning activity called Back to Back. The girls get into group of two, sit down back to back, link arms, and try to stand up. It can be quite a challenge! Some of the girls even got into groups of three or more and tried it again. Then we had the girls get into one big group and had them work together to stand up. It was so great to see all of them collaborate to achieve their goal!

Following the morning activity we took group pictures (including a few silly pics!) and went back inside to put the finishing touches on their projects. It's been so cool to see their creativity take off and watch their robots, apps, websites, and Lily Pad canvases come together!

A Painting Worth 1000 Lines of Code

(Get it? Instead of "Worth 1000 words"? :D Yes? Ok, moving on....)

Happy National Catfish Day!!!!

Today's theme was Sports Day and the girls did an excellent job at looking sporty! When then started the day by playing a game of Person to Person! This game worked a little like Twister, except without the mat. The girls had to form groups of whatever number and touch whatever body part Sofi called out. For example "Groups of 2 back to back!"
It was so fun to see all the girls scramble around trying to find groups! You did great girls!

The girls then came back inside and began working on their LilyPad Canvases, and let me tell you, they all look amazing! All of them are very well and beautifully painted! And let's not forget their
websites as well! Those looks very well organized and very creative. Everyone also worked very hard on their programming today. We know it was very difficult, but the girls did a great job figuring out their problems and working through them.

For lunch, the girls had delicious sandwiches! Yum!

After Lunch, we went on a field to TCBY's where the girls got to get frozen yogurt! SWEET!!!
Then when we got back, the girls got even more time to finish up their projects. We cannot wait for your parents to see all the hard work you put into this week!

Don't forget to wear your YWiC shirt tomorrow!!!

Blog Prompt: A witch's curse has changed you into a living portrait (or a piece of artwork). What do you look like?

Brittany: I would be a painting of a girl in a black and white dress looking out to an ocean in the distance. Everything would be black and white except my skin~

Comfort Clothes

Happy Hump Day!

Today's theme was Pajama Day, so many of the girls were dressed in their comfy clothes. There were a few onsies, including an awesome Batman one. For the morning activity, the girls were divided into three teams and lined up. All of the members of the team, save the last one in the line, were blindfolded. They were told to put their hands on the shoulders of the girl in front of them. The object of the game was for each team to try to get foam computers that were strewn across the field using nonverbal techniques. The last person was the only one who could see the field, so they were to direct the others and get the first person to pick up the little computers. The team with the most computers won.

After the activity, the girls came inside and started on LilyPad. This morning's lesson was on sounds and programming the speaker. The girls were released to work on their LilyPad projects. They worked really hard today and some of them finished their paintings! After about an hour, they switched gears to Javascript. Samira taught them how to add Javascript code to their websites to make their websites interesting and cool. The girls learned how to add functions and buttons and other cool things. Their websites are gonna look so awesome!

After working on their websites for a while, it was time for lunch! We feasted on some amazing chicken wings from Roadrunner Pizza. Thankfully, there were many different kinds, as well as pizza for the vegetarians and gluten free people.

Right after lunch, the girls were ushered into 118, or the ice box, with a few getting lost along the way. The girls learned Linux while freezing. It was definitely a good day for pajamas!

<----As Promised, I have added this to the blog.
                                                                   -Batman

Tomorrow is Sports Day! Make sure to wear your favorite jersey or team shirt!

Blog Prompt: If you could have any animal, real of fictional, as your pet/sidekick, what would it be?

Ana: I would love to have white tiger as my sidekick, because I am, as you all know, Batman. I need an animal to keep me company and alert me if there are any signs of danger that I cannot see. Plus, I could cuddle with it! Assuming it is domesticated, of course.

Witches and Broomsticks and Wands, oh my!

What a wonderful day! To keep with our theme of Harry Potter, the room was littered with famous quotes from the books. It was so awesome seeing some of the girls come decked out in their Harry Potter clothes. For the morning activity, the girls went outside and played Wizards, Elves, and Trolls. To play, teams would huddle up and decide which thing to be. Then they would line up facing each other, and on the count of three they would take on the act of their chosen thing. Whichever team won would chase the losing team and try to tag them before they reached their safe zone. The objective was to get as many players onto your team as you could.

After the activity was over, the girls went inside and began painting their canvases for their LilyPad projects. The whole morning was spent on their paintings. These girls are soooooo talented! I couldn't produce anything like they are producing. And then it was lunch! The meal consisted of red and green enchiladas, chicken tacos, beans, rice, chips, and salsa and queso. It was delicioso!

When lunchtime was over the girls went back to the room to learn more about HTML, taught by the lovely Samira. After learning how to program tables the girls got started on their own projects. We're so excited to see what they come up with!

First Day of Camp! First Day of Camp! (again) :D

Today was the beginning of the last week of YWiC camps and the girls faced it with the energy and enthusiasm of Nemo! To kick off the day we began with the blanket challenge. The girls were divided into two groups and each group was given a blanket and instructed to make sure that all of the group members were somehow connected to the blanket and none of the group members were touching the grass. During the challenge the blanket would then get smaller and smaller. It was so much fun to see all of the girls' solutions! Creative problem-solving at its finest!

After we came inside the girls learned about the NCWIT Aspirations in Computing award program. Each of the girls are eligible to apply for the awards and we highly encourage that they do! Click on the link above to learn more about the program!

The girls then spent the morning learning about Lily Pad Arduino. This program allows the girls to program LEDs and a speaker that can be sewn to items using conductive thread. Super cool! After lunch the girls began learning the basics of HTML, a programming language that is used to create websites. Both of these projects allow the girls to be super creative and we're all very excited to see their final projects. This is gonna be another amazing week at YWiC.

Blog Prompt: Picture yourself three years from now. Tell us about what you see! What about five years? Ten years? Twenty?

Above and Beyond Blog Prompt: Explore the Aspirations in Computing website (the link is above) and tell us what you learn about the program. When is the application due? Go through the award winners. Can you find any current or former YWiC campers or instructors?

Don't forget! Tomorrow is the Potterluck! So whether you're a Gryffindor or a Slytherin, don't forget to show your Hogwarts spirit tomorrow at camp! :)

1 Week Down, 1 More to Go!

Good golly gosh, girls! It's Friday!
Time to party!

But not too hard, you might get a headache :)

Today was another great day as we started out by playing Heads Up! The girls held a name card to their head and had to walk around asking each other for hints so they could try to guess who they were. They all did very well, and although a few girls got stuck, they remained resolute until they finally got it!

The girls then came back inside to finish up their Week 1 projects. All of our lovely ladies have created astounding things! From EV3 robotic snakes, dogs, dragsters,  and spinners, to robot mazes, and even beautifully created apps!

Java of Both Kinds

Good Morning, Girls! We started off the day with the Human Knot. The girls were split into two groups. Once they were separated, we had them stand shoulder-to-shoulder in a circle and then put their hands into the circle. Sadly, we weren't able to ask them to shake it all about. Once all hands were locked with someone not next to them, we told the girls to untangle themselves. One group finished before the other and then went to help out the other group. Yay for teamwork! :)

Once both teams were successfully untangled, we went inside for some Java. I'm sure some of the girls were disappointed the Java was not the liquid kind. (But don't worry, we have a field trip to the Barnes and Noble with a Starbucks later so the girls can get their coffee fix!) They girls continued to prove that they're fast learners as they quickly caught onto Java and created their own number guessing game. They did wonderful!

Then they got to have some free-build time before lunch. It's so cool to see all their projects come together. We can't wait to see their final products! :) They've been working so hard this week.

For lunch we had super yummy BBQ- yum! :) Right after lunch we went on fun little field trip to Barnes and Noble. All of the girls enjoyed browsing books, sipping Starbucks, and chatting the afternoon away. :) When we got back the girls had some more free build time. Overall, it was just another amazing day at YWiC! :D

Veggie Wednesday!

Happy National Eat Your Vegetables Day! I hope you all ate some greens today.

Today's activity was Human Pictionary, a game where the campers were divided into teams and then chose a card with an object on it. The team would then try to create the object with their bodies and the other teams were tasked with guessing what the object was. If a team guess correctly within a minute, the team gets a point. Likewise, if the team making the object gets another team to guess what they are making within a minute, they get a point. The team that gets the most points wins the favorite candy of each of its members. The teams were super creative with their creation of objects. The Weirdos, composed of Alexa, Belle, Cassandra, Emma, Katrina, Marisol, and Renee, won the challenge and received candy upon going back into the Ice Box.
Once the girls were situated and with snacks, Nicole went over NXT/EV3 programming and the projects available. Before the girls jumped into their builds, Michelle and Abby gave a very interesting presentation for Project Neo, a First Robotics Competition team here in Las Cruces. The girls got information packets and then set to work on their own projects. We listened to music the girls requested on YouTube while they worked.
About ten minutes before 11, Brittany gave a presentation to the girls about making mistakes.
The girls had about half an hour to work on their projects before lunch. What was lunch you ask? Pizza!! We had a nice selection of pizza and chips. The girls ate up most of the pizza and then went back to work. They had an open build for AppInventor. The apps look amazing, girls! It was all-in-all a very good, peaceful day. Can't wait for tomorrow! Don't forget to bring money for the field trip to Barnes & Noble.

Blog Prompt: If you could shape-shift into any object, what would it be? (No animals :P)

Analyssa: I would love to be able to shape-shift into water. If I could shape-shift into water, I could change into any form of the compound, from ice to water vapor to rain. If I were able to do this, I could move virtually anywhere and still be able to survive.

Brittany: I would shape-shift into a computer, that way I'd still be able to do the things I love, like surfing the web and watching funny YouTube videos!

A Day of Robots, Apps, 'n Fun!

Today we had bunch of EV3-Robo-App-inventing-Mexicanfood-eating girls come up with some cool ideas.

<----- This wonderful group of ladies kicked off the day by playing the game Two Truths and a Lie.  We don't usually promote lying but this game is a great way to learn a bunch of facts about each other!!

The gals finished their EV3 Educator Vehicle build and then learned to program the brick brains to move their vehicle around. Some also started to use the sensors and program their robot to detect light and to turn around when the bot runs into a wall.

Blog Prompt: What is something that makes you smile?
What is the most adventurous thing you have ever done?

Elena:
The one thing that always makes me smile, no matter what, is my younger sister. :) She never fails at cheering me up. Whether it's a cute face or a witty comment or a corny joke she knows exactly what to do to brighten my day.

The most adventurous thing I've ever done was when I climbed up and jumped off a 40 foot platform at this camp I went to. (Don't worry, I had a harness!) My palms were all clammy I made my way up to the platform. I was shaking when I was finally at the top of the platform. When I jumped off the platform I had the biggest adrenaline rush of my life! This moment was both terrifying and exhilarating! I loved that I really got out of my comfort zone and did something adventurous. :)

First day of high school camp!!

Welcome ladies! Today is the start of the first week of the high school camp. This morning started off with the morning activity, where the girls went around the circle and said their name and what they liked. If any of the other girls agreed with the statement, they walked toward the center of the circle. It was so interesting to see the different interests that the girls have!

After the morning activity, the girls went inside and took the pre-survey. When they finished the girls made name tags for themselves. Once that was done the rest of the morning was dedicated to setting up blogs and learning about core concepts in Computer Science. Then it was lunch! For lunch we had fettuccine, ravioli, and salad. It was delicious!!! There was music playing during lunch time, so it felt like a giant party =)

When lunch time was over, the girls went into the room and got started on EV3 Robotics. It went well, and the races were entertaining. After the races the girls worked on cars. All in all it was a good day.

Last day of week 2 :(

We are all sad to say goodbye to all our middle schools girls but we do hope to see you guys in the future and we wish all of you heading to high school a good luck!

This morning we took the girls outside for the morning activity. Similar to the Name Game we gave each of the girls a card to put on their forehead but this time there were numbers instead. The girls had to rearrange themselves in order from 1 to 36 without talking, mouthing the number, or using their hands. We then took our camp picture then went back inside. The girls got to finish up their EV3 and App Inventor projects that they will be presenting to their friends and family.

Later on friends and family came to enjoy lunch with the girls. Then got to present.
