Please write 2 sentences each for what you did today in your Core class, Workshop I and Workshop II.

Blog Prompt: Design some gadget, machine, building, or other creation that might enrich the future. What does it look like? What does it do? How does it function? In what ways might it benefit people?

Noor- I want to teleport so badly! We need a teleportation device that can help me travel around the world in just a few minutes! I would look like a holographic disc that you stand on and a keyboard to type where you would like to go. So to work it you step on the disc and type your location. Then within minutes you're teleported! It could help with transportation!

Wednesday, Engineering Spotlight!!

description for engineeringposter

Ellen Ochoa- Born in Los Angeles, California, astronaut Ellen Ochoa first left Earth in July 1991 and became the world's first Hispanic female astronaut. A mission specialist and flight engineer, she has since logged more than 900 hours in space on four flights, the last in 2002. Dr. Ochoa's many awards include NASA's Exceptional Service Medal (1997) and Outstanding Leadership Medal (1995). She became the director of the Johnson Space Center.Besides being an astronaut, researcher, and engineer, Ochoa is a classical flutist.

Kim Masi- Mechanical Engineer at Walt Disney Company, Orlando, FL.
Interview with Kim by engineergirl.org:

"My name is Kim Masi and I've been working for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts for about 2 and a half years now. For the last 2 years I've been working as an Engineer for the Design & Engineering department, which supports all of the attractions, entertainment infastructures, parades, transportation, and just about anything you can imagine here at Walt Disney World. One of my biggest projects has been working on the opening of the brand new Festival Of Fantasy Parade, which features lots of new exciting floats and technological advances.I have a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University in Boston, MA."

Marylin Jorgensen Reece- One of the most travelled pieces of highway in the entire United States was designed by a woman who said she studied engineering because she liked mathematics and "didn't want to be a teacher." During the time when Marilyn Jorgensen Reece (1926-2004) was in college, women who had an aptitude and bent toward the technical weren't often encouraged into many career paths other than teaching. Reece achieved distinction not only in becoming the first female to earn full licensing as a civil engineer in the state of California in 1954, but she also was entrusted with the design of the San Diego-Santa Monica
 freeway interchange in Los Angeles.

If you could create a national holiday, what would be be? What would it be called and what would the holiday be about?

Jen - I would create National Do Something For Someone Else Day! The nice deeds wouldn't have to be complicated or extravagant, just something as simple as making someone a cup of tea or writing a "Have a nice day!" post-it note to a friend. An act of kindness can totally turn someone's day around, and I think we should all try to do something nice every day. :)

Noor-  I would create National Watch Netflix Day! Watch Netflix all day! I usually don't have time to watch any shows because of school and work. I would want a day to just binge watch Netflix!!!

Let the Games Begin!

Happy Hunger Games!

We hope that everyone had an awesome day today and that you've been learning a lot. All of the instructors have been working super hard to make sure that your classes are informative AND fun :)

Students racing their Generator-Bots!

Also, we hope that you're all ready and excited for tonight's Second Annual Hunger Games! We've been running around all day to get everything set up and in place so that the games go off without a hitch. Make sure that you take a few minutes tonight to change into some good running shoes - You'll need them. As the Gamemakers, we have some special surprises in store. May the odds be ever in your favor :)

Computer Science Spotlight:

Ada Lovelace "was an English mathematician and writer chiefly known for her work on Charles Babbage's early mechanical general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine. Her notes on the engine include what is recognised as the first algorithm intended to be carried out by a machine. Because of this, she is often described as the world's first computer programmer."

Hedy Lamarr was an "Austrian actress and inventor. Her most significant technological contribution was her co-invention of an early technique for spread spectrum communications and frequency hopping, which paved the way for today's wireless communications and which, upon its invention in 1941, was deemed so vital to national defense that government officials would not allow publication of its details." Technology created by Hedy Lamarr is still in use today by the U.S. Navy.

Grace Hopper "was an American computer scientist and United States Navy rear admiral. A pioneer in the field, she was one of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I computer and developed the first compiler for a computer programming language. She popularized the idea of machine-independent programming languages, which led to the development of COBOL, one of the first modern programming languages. She is credited with popularizing the term "debugging" for fixing computer glitches (inspired by an actual moth removed from the computer) ... The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Hopper (DDG-70) is named for her, as was the Cray XE6 "Hopper" supercomputer at NERSC."

Sana Odeh, Professor of Computer Science at NYU Abu Dhabi, "takes a cross-disciplinary approach to Computer Science in her courses on game programming and web development. Her research focuses on information systems for the developing world and assessing the effectiveness of e-learning systems. A proponent of women in technology, Odeh advises Courant's Women in Computing and the Annual New York City Girls Computer Science and Engineering Colloquium."

Magical Mathematical Moday!

Magic Mathematical  Monday:

Today in the Mathematics Spotlight:

Women, or anyone for that matter, in Mathematical fields are scarce in quantity.
Mathematics is a foundation for almost every aspect of the world we live in and an important subject to understand.

Some of the famous women throughout history that completed some mathematical achievements are listed below:

Marjorie Lee Browne.jpg
Noether.jpg
Marjorie Lee Browne (African-American)
Mary Cartwright (British)
Maria Agnesi (Italian)
Winifred Asprey (American)
Grace Alele-Williams (Nigerian)
Dame Mary Lucy Cartwright.jpg
http://images.seroundtable.com/mendel-1333132493.gifMathematics can help us to achieve a better understanding of the world around us. Through visual representations we can study our world at a closer look. Mathematics can also be combined with almost any field.

Careers in pure mathematics may not be the end goal for some. Good thing you can double major in college. You can combine degrees(what you want to do) in any order. I can have a MAJOR field of study in Applied Mathematics and MINOR(what you have some interest in doing) in Biology.  You can have as many MAJORS and MINORS you want!!

Careers in Mathematics can be
Found OR Combined with:
Teaching
Archaeology
Engineering
Bioinformatics
Finance
Law or Medical
Computer Science
Cryptography
Physicist
Technical Writers
Biology
Applied Mathematician.....
And so much more!!!
OR
(You may just want to use math to express your love like the message above!)

Please write 2 sentences each for what you did today in your Core class, Workshop I and Workshop II.
