Coding Beyond Camp!!!

Summer Camp may be over for most, but CODING never ends!!

During the last four weeks of summer camp, Young Women in Computing taught a variety of platforms that focused on young women straying from drag and drop programming to more industry and applicable platforms. Some of the platforms covered were:

  • HTML
  • Java in Greenfoot
  • Lilipad Arduino
  • Ruby
  • Python
  • LiveCode

Some of the cool projects range from a Spongebob game in Greenfoot to Arduino Bags that had speaker, button and light capability. An example is a Batman and Robin bag that played the 1991 theme song and a Pixar inspired UP bag that had LED balloons and played the UP song.. Pretty cool!!!

So Remember to visit YWiC's Website to keep up programming!! Most of the platforms used were open source and free....

Aristotle once said " No great genius has ever existed without some touch of madness!!!

To leave with some thought. Convert the following  from binary to text to get a secret message!!!

Pajama-wearing Programmers!

Sofi, Ana, and Ari!
Happy PJ Day!

Tomorrow is presentation day! Wow, time flies.

Hope you are all working hard! Enjoy some UP gifs :)

Jessie was the Hulk!
We started the day with a Guess Who activity! It was fun to watch everyone figure out who they were!

We came inside and worked on Python. You made a word scrambler that helped you in your scavenger hunt! The winners will get prizes tomorrow!

After Python, you did Greenfoot with SP. She taught you how to begin designing your game!
We had lunch from Santa Fe Grill! Yum!

Then we did Linux commands in pairs! After that you had Open Build!
We will be presenting tomorrow so you should get ready for presentations! Work on the projects you want to present!

Wednesday Fun Day

\

Congratulations to Hufflepuff last night for winning the House Cup!! Yayy it is the first time in history ever ever ever to win! You guys rock plus you are the nicest house:).

Today we started the day with a fun game of tag. It got intense...We continued with the painting, sewing, and most importantly, programming! After enjoying some pizza, we learned handy things in Python and Greenfoot.

Blog Prompt: What do you think you would like to do after High School? Which career, where to go, what to do? Explain why :)!

At the end of each day of camp, we encourage our students to fill out a small survey so that we can better craft an amazing camp experience. The survey for today can be found here!

Spells, Potions, Wizards, and More...

Today we began the day with a magicall game of Elves, Giants and Wizards. Giant beats Elf, Elf beats Wizard, and Wizard beats Giant. Hard to remember but you guys did great!

Then we moved on to working on your amazing LilyPad projects. We have such a creative and artistic group! Remember not to cross the negatives and positives or you will collapse of electric shock. Just kidding... maybe....

After lunch we got to work with Python. We learned the importance of reading through the program, making sure that the print command is spelled correctly and that we didn't put extra quotations on our comments! Also we learned about modulus, it returns a remainder of a division to determine if a number is even or odd. Say what!

Blog Prompt: If you could magically get the power to cast one spell for the rest of your life, what spell would you choose and why? Make up a name and purpose for your spell.

At the end of each day of camp, we encourage our students to fill out a small survey so that we can better craft an amazing camp experience. The survey for today can be found here!

The journey begins (...or continues)!

Will you be able to break the cypher this week?!
Welcome to the last first day of YWiC's high school summer camp! We are so excited to have you here! We can't wait to explore the exciting world of Computer Science with you - there's so much to learn, do, and experiment with!

This week we will be programming LilyPad Arduino boards in a C-based language and will create a game in Greenfoot. We'll also encrypt/decrypt messages using Python, and the final project will be to decode some messages and follow clues to find some hidden treasure :)

YWiC uses student surveys for research purposes. The 2014 HS Summer Camp Week 2 Pre-Survey can be found here!

Blog Prompt: You have a source at the CDC and she has just informed you that the government has confirmed that the Zombie Apocalypse has begun. You have 24 hours to prepare before people in your town start turning. How will you use your time to prepare for the apocalypse?

At the end of each day of camp, we encourage our students to fill out a small survey so that we can better craft an amazing camp experience. The survey for today can be found here!

Friday Friday Gotta Get Down on Friday!

Wow. Where has the time gone? First week of High School camp is done! :O Let's Party!
By the way Potterluck won the activity next week!
Enjoy the Harry Potter gifs!

Snape approves of how awesome you are.

END OF CAMP SURVEY: Here

So we started the morning with everyone's favorite activity:

Human Knot! It's a great teamwork and problem-solving game. It's really fun to watch everyone figure out how to untangle themselves.

After the activity we took the camp group picture. I love this one cause we're all being silly. Once inside you took the end of camp survey, then worked on projects until 11:30.

Then we went to practice in room 102. After that was lunch! Mexican food! Yum!

Presentations happened after that and you were amazing! See you next week!

One more day!

Today was all about teamwork and hardwork. We started the day with a team-building activity. Beginning with small groups, everyone had to sit back-to-back and then, without using their hands, had to lift each other up into a standing position.

After a little more work in Ruby, everyone worked on finishing their projects for presentations tomorrow - HTML, Ruby and/or LiveCode. The girls also learned about an exciting research opportunity and the NCWiT Aspire program.

Blog Prompt: Write a paragraph about space. Include the following words:

  • hard drive
  • tape
  • keyboard
  • program
  • control
At the end of each day of camp, we encourage our students to fill out a small survey so that we can better craft an amazing camp experience. The survey for today can be found here!

Witty Wednesday!

Coming back inside after the activity!

It's Wednesday! Halfway point! I hope you're ready for a great day! This morning's activity was two truths and a lie. It was interesting to learn more about you guys!
Surprising that you didn't think I lived in Las Cruces for 10 years! -Noor
SP helping Sasha with her LiveCode!

After the activity we came inside to work on LiveCode. Everyone was allowed to work on their own pace. Your games are coming along nicely! You will have open-build time tomorrow to work on your project more!

Jen teaching Ruby Basics
Then we learned a new platform, Ruby, with Jen! She introduced the basics such as setting up the terminal and commenting. She went over variables as well. Afterwards, she helped you start the Infinite Monkey-Theorem project.

After lunch we went to room 118, which is the bigger lab used by the department. You leaned the basic Linux commands with SP. It felt weird not being in room 118b (our home!).
Then you were allowed to work on HTML until Blogging time! Your businesses are coming along nicely! :)
I'm really surprised at the level of creativity you all have! It's awesome!
______________________________________________________________________________ Blog Prompt: If you could travel anywhere and anytime (past, present, or future) where would you go? Why?

Noor- If I could travel anywhere and anytime I would go to Babylonian times. The Babylon dynasty originated from Iraq, that's where I'm from. I want to see what it was like to love there during those times. I've read books and watched movies but it would be amazing to experience it firsthand.

SP- If I could travel anywhere and anytime I would go to to 340 BCE in Greece. I would go there to see Aristotle and Socrates give speeches and teach. I love the different ideas of philosophy that they came up with today and would really like to hear it from the original speakers.
"There is no great genius without a mixture of madness"-Aristotle
"Wisdom begins in wonder"-Socrates
